Just finished Roger Zelazny's epic novel Lord of Light, a story combining Hinduism, Buddhism, and sci-fi. The premise is basically a bunch of humans have colonized a planet and have developed technology to be able to transfer their consciousness to different bodies, basically inventing the Wheel of Karma and the cycle of reincarnation. Certain humans start developing psychic abilities and are able to hone these with technological advances, taking on the roles of Hindu gods.
This is Yama, God of Death. As he appears in the book, we see him in two forms, the dark one in the present, and the pale form in a lengthy but breathtaking flashback. The book describes his movements as fluid and smooth, very snake-like. I picture him moving the same in both bodies. Though all the "gods" are just humans, they have developed god-like abilities, and one of Yama's is the not-to-be-joked-about death gaze, which literally sucks the life out of anyone who falls beneath it. He is weapons master and has pretty much invented all the weapons the gods use, to include Shiva's Thunder Chariot. He is not the main character of the book, but he certainly an important character, perhaps second important to our protagonist Sam (short for Mahasamatman).
Thank you!!! I love Lord of Light too but there are not many people who have read it! I hope to have the time to draw more characters or to draw some scenes from it, like the battle with the Rakshas, but we'll see.
