Vishnu, Architect of Heaven by squonkhunter Vishnu, Architect of Heaven by squonkhunter
Because I'm already on a Vishnu kick because of Mr. Game Show Host over here: squonkhunter.deviantart.com/ar…
This is Vishnu from Roger Zelazny's novel Lord of Light, which is a sci-fi novel where humans have developed technology that allows one to download one's consciousness into another body once their old body has grown decrepit. That is, humans have gained the ability to reincarnate. Certain humans have specific talents, which can be enhanced with machinery to create what are essentially superpowers. These are called Attributes, and those with Attributes view themselves as superior to those without, and a group of these gifted ones got together and decided to rule over the rest of the human race by taking on the forms of various Hindu gods and controlling when humans invent certain things, when a revolution should be started, and how many times can we plunge humanity back into the dark ages before we get tired of fucking one another?

This is VISHNU, ARCHITECT OF HEAVEN. As his title professes, he has, in fact, designed a physical place that the "gods" like to call Heaven. Funnily enough, whilst I was reading the description of Heaven, this song was playing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bKW7J…
Pretty much Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

Because Vishnu is a human masquerading as a god, he has to dye his skin blue and attach two robot arms to his waist. Because humans have figured out reincarnation, I think they'd have managed robot arms and permanent blue skin dye. Vishnu tries to keep his arms as similar as possible and adds robotic designs to his sleeves when he can't make his robotic arms seem more human. This helps with the four arms illusion.
According to Hindu legend, the actual god Vishnu likes to recline on a snake deity named Ananta Shesha, who possesses many cobra heads and is apparently chill with Vishnu sitting on him and probably having a go with Lakshmi while he's at it. Personally, I don't think I could get in the mood with all these things looking at me like that: datastore04.rediff.com/h1500-w… No one has asked Ananta Shesha how he feels about this.
Vishnu's discus is used as a hologram projector. Currently he is viewing more architectural plans, but mostly as a pose for the picture. He'd more likely be caught using it to entertain himself, perhaps by watching Sherlock or Hannibal, according to my sister's sleepy suggestions.
So, because this Vishnu is not the one of legend, but of a human in a sci-fi novel, these snakes are GUNS! That's right. He's got snakes with freakin' laser beams. He can also take them off when he doesn't want to carry around that much gold or, again, wants to get it on with Lakshmi without their hungry eyes analyzing his every move. Not that they're real, but a human hanging out in Heaven with nothing to do for centuries and centuries and centuries will eventually imagine anything, and thus I don't believe it to be too far of a stretch to assume he sometimes converses with them when Lakshmi's too bored to fuck.

Sketched in pencil, then colored in Photoshop CS5. I salute all those who read the entire description. You are my blessed children. Sleep well.

Oh my goodness you're talking to me!!! Lol I remember looking up art for Lord of Light a year back and seeing your work and being really inspired by it. I tried to go a bit more organic because I was trying to stray away from being too influenced by your work (because it's just that good). You were definitely an influence, though; I adore your portrayals of the characters.

Hey there, thanks for the kind words!  It's really inspiring when I'm told that my own work has inspired someone else; it makes my work as an illustrator worthwhile and gratifying.  Also, I'm glad that there are other fans of this book out there!  Keep up the good work! :)

I read the whole thing (and yes I accept your salutations).

As an Indian I find this hilarious. "Having a go at Lakshmi while he's at it..", lol that cracked me up.

Opening week for a show, everyone is either a zombie or on the verge of murder...except, of course, the actors, who are my special unicorns. Tonight was opening night, so the insanity should die down for a few days. :)

Anyway, looking at your art is therapeutic.
