Mozart Tenors: Belfiore

Description

Conte Belfiore from a very early opera of Mozart's, back when he was only eighteen, "La Finta Giardiniera" (1775). Pictured is Belfiore with his beloved Violante, and they are currently crazy. Like, literally. They think they're gods. Greek gods, to be specific. Hence the makeshift laurels they found in the forest. Now they can be cutesy crazy despite their tumultuous history, which includes a domestic stabbing. From Belfiore. To his poor Violante.

But, Mozart, much like Midas, has a magic touch, and everything he touches turns to cute. So this is a very cute opera, until you stop to think about it.

This version of Belfiore is inspired by Richard Croft's portrayal of the character in this performance:

Much later La Finta Giardiniera was reworked, and although this version appeared in 1796, after Mozart's death, it was done so well people have always wondered whether the Great Man himself didn't have a hand in it before passing. Never mind, it is great fun to listen to. Rene Jacobs and the Freiburger Barockorchester made a great recording of the 1796 version in 2012.
