I really like this piece. There are too many photorealism art pieces in this competition. Although they are rendered very well and show the artist's talent, they are not much different than a photograph. Yours, however, captures an essence, character, and immagination.
Looking into my crystal ball, I see that an expresso machine will be arriving at your doorstep within the hour... If that's what it takes to get an artist going, then let the java flow.
The background with its splatters and blotches gives it a feeling of old horsehair plaster and crushed clamshell plaster of the kind Mr. Collins in the original series speaks of when describing The Old House to Vidtoria Winters. Barnabas' twisted body in this is a nice, intimate touch as if he's describing some intricate architectural detail of his home. You have drawn the lines and shaded the face, hair, hands, clothing, and accessories to perfection. Of note are the folds of the coachman's cloak which are impeccably rendered. This has an Edward Gorey quality to it but with a caricature that is clearly the present Barnabas Collins. Well done.
Thank you so much! I've been meaning to watch the original series, though I did appreciate how the pacing of the film had a very soap opera feel. I'm really glad you read that much into my painting. I'm very happy to hear it, and the fact that you compared it to Edward Gorey has buttered my buns immensely, and I thank you for your gracious comments.
see what I mean? The lines are crisp and resolute. The ink values without blemish. You give yourself far too little credit, squon I've no love for the subject matter though: That trailer was cringe inducing
Haha thank you. I sort of rushed it. Probably wouldn't have made top ten anyway, but that's alright. I have to say, when Isaw the trailer, I had the same reaction, but then it sort of grew on me and I actually will see it.
I love the ones chosen for the finals, too. Especially this one: [link] DAYUM that's nice. Brilliant in how much it conveys, looks somewhat like the original Barnabas from the TV show, yet also unmistakably Johnny Depp. Very creative. I hope it wins first place.
Lol I wasn't going for a distortion, but the paper was so bumpy with all the ink I put on it that I'm flattening it now. I'm hoping to get a better scan and upload something with less distortion, but we'll see. Thank you.
